Abstract
Workplace bullying undermines employee well-being and organisational productivity across various sectors, with temporary employees being particularly vulnerable due to job insecurity, limited organisational support, and precarious employment conditions. This study investigated temporary employees' experiences of workplace bullying in a higher education institution to identify effective ways to manage it. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilising an exploratory research design to interview 20 temporary employees. The study used semi-structured interviews to collect data. The thematic analysis technique was used to analyse the collected data. Vulnerability of temporary employees, abuse of authority and exploitation, workplace isolation and marginalisation, lack of institutional support and accountability, and exclusion from professional development and career advancement emerged as antecedents of bullying themes. Psychological intimidation and verbal abuse, exclusion and isolation from workplace activities, overloading with work and unfair expectations, and threats to professional standing and career sabotage emerged as forms of workplace bullying themes. Mental and emotional distress, decline in work performance and productivity, high turnover and loss of talent, and erosion of organisational culture and morale emerged as consequences of bullying themes. Establishing clear anti-bullying policies and guidelines, training and awareness for staff and managers, confidential reporting systems and fair investigations, and psychological support and restorative interventions emerged as mechanisms to address workplace bullying. The study recommends that institutions should develop clear anti-bullying policies, prioritise support systems for temporary employees, and host awareness and training programs to prevent and address workplace bullying.
