Abstract

This study investigates the violence perpetrated against women and children as depicted in folktales selected from the text Khale ka Makwangala. The study was motivated by the prevalence of women and children’s suffrage through the suppression of their rights as human beings. It is noted with concern that some of the victims remain silent, especially in cases where the perpetrator doubles as both the father-figure or husband and the bread winner. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyse the violation of women's and children's rights in selected Xitsonga folktales. It is conceded that women and children’s rights violations are today’s major problem affecting their welfare on a global scale. The study’s objectives are to investigate the ways in which the oppression of females and children can be manifested, to examine thematic nuances in tandem with the oppression of females from Khale ka Makwangala and and to explore traditional strategies for the prevention of the oppression of women and children. The study is divided into five chapters as follows: The First Chapter looks at the purpose, motivation, and definitions of research terms. This will be followed by Chapter Two in which other scholars' perspectives on the topic will be reviewed. The Third Chapter outlines the research methodology, while the Fourth Chapter details the analysis of selected folktales. The last chapter, which is the Fifth Chapter, is a summary, which also includes the recommendations and conclusion to the study.
