Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a flood risk assessment model for Polokwane Local Municipality, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing techniques. This was conducted through mapping and modelling flood scenarios based on historical flood events and creating flood risk maps which were used to detect changes that took place in the study area from the year 2014 to 2023. Flood causing parameters were utilised to map flooded and flood risk areas i.e., elevation, slope, land use/land cover, rainfall and proximity to water bodies. Findings show that GIS and Remote sensing can be successfully utilised to model and map flood risk in Polokwane Local Municipality. The flood risk map of the study area has shown that most of the study area falls within a high flood risk zone. A future flood risk prediction model has been generated in order to predict the flood vulnerability of Polokwane Local Municipality. This study provided an innovative approach for flood risk management in the study area and the results can be used by decision makers for planning and risk aversion.
