The effects of traditional authority land allocation on rural livelihoods in the Ga-Sekororo Maruleng Local Municipality, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of traditional authority land allocation on rural livelihoods in Ga-Sekororo village, South Africa. Adopting a pragmatic paradigm, a mixed-methods convergent parallel design was employed to collect and analyse data. Quantitative data were gathered through household surveys (n = 111), while qualitative insights were obtained from seven key informant interviews. Findings indicate that 59% of households are female-headed, with typical sizes of 4–6 members, and 49% possess secondary education. Population growth and subsistence farming (each 32%) emerged as major drivers of land allocation. However, 68% of respondents reported no rural livelihood improvement, citing poor spatial planning and limited economic opportunities. Thematic analysis revealed two key themes: Population Dynamics and Household Expansion. The study recommends enhanced collaboration between Traditional Authorities and Maruleng Municipality to align land allocation practices with the Spatial Development Framework and Integrated Development Plan, promoting sustainable development and curbing fragmented settlement growth.
