Abstract
Women academics have encountered many obstacles in pursuing careers in higher education globally. In developing countries, women are still facing cultural and traditional prejudices and countless factors leading to underrepresentation in leadership positions caused also by performance challenges. The main objective of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the academic performance of women at a Higher Education Institution in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The study utilised a qualitative approach and employed a descriptive research design to provide a comprehensive understanding of the specific experiences encountered by individuals or groups daily. Thematic Analysis was used to analyse the data collected. The research was conducted at the University of Limpopo, and data was gathered from a sample of 15 women academics representing all four faculties of the University, using a semi-structured interview guide. The findings illustrated the intricate interplay of various factors, including social, personal, organizational, and technological, that shape the work performance of women academics. Additionally, the study offered valuable recommendations for addressing the challenges faced by women academics in optimising their work performance.
