Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how COVID-19 has affected the hospital groups Life Healthcare and Netcare's financial performance. To achieve this objective, the study evaluates whether COVID-19 constituted a differential effect on the net profit and share price of the two hospital groups between the period before COVID-19 and during COVID-19. Pandas, Numpy, SciPy, and other statistical tools are used in the study to gather information and analyze how COVID-19 has affected Life Healthcare's and the Netcare group's financial performance. The findings demonstrate that the pandemic has significantly impacted the healthcare sector. The pandemic was first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The Chinese government imposed a rigorous lockdown on Hubei, shutting down its economic activity but not preventing the spread of the virus to other provinces and subsequently to the whole world. The study concludes that the pandemic has had a significant impact on the financial performance of Life Healthcare and Netcare in South Africa. The study recommends further research to better understand the effects of COVID-19 on the financial performance in the health sector and to develop strategies to mitigate the negative effects of future pandemics.
